Singapore based company has to pay $2.2 million for oil pollution
A container ship firm based in Singapore – Pacific International Lines has to pay $2.2 million in criminal penalties for illegal oil waste disposal and a falsified oil record book.
The company pleaded guilty in court in Washington for giving false information to the U.S. Coast Guard and for violating a law against pollution from ships. Southern Lily 2 is operated by the company in American Samoa. The Coast Guard was on its way for inspection when was discovered that the ship’s oil water separator was not working.
This is not the only case for a short period of water pollution in water off American Samoa. A month ago a fishing company registered in New Zealand had to pay $2.4 million and sentenced to 3 years of probation for dumping oil waste.
