Nigeria’s Navy Kills Another 6 Pirates in Gun Battle

The Nigerian Navy has killed another six pirates and injured one more in its campaign to end the expansion of pirate territory in the Gulf of Guinea.

According to the Washington Post, the pirates engaged the navy in a gun battle late Sunday off the coast of Calabar in Nigerian and Cameroonian waters. Nigeria’s navy fired back, killing the six pirates; the other assailant is getting treatment for injuries while in custody.

This operation is the latest in a string of triumphs for the Nigerian Navy that has heavily increased its presence offshore. In the last two weeks, the navy has killed 18 pirates in battles and arrested five.

There are calls for an alliance of naval forces to patrol the Gulf of Guinea ‘pirate hotspot’, but naval forces from other surrounding countries have said they don’t have the same capacity as Nigeria to fight piracy.
