Navy Chief sees off 30 warships in Batam

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BATAM — Navy chief Admiral Marsetio here on Monday saw off some 30 warships that participated in Multilateral Naval Exercise Komodo 2014 from the waters of Batam to Anambas and Natuna, a spokesman said.

“The Navy chief conducted final inspections on the warships before they were released for departure to Anambas and Natuna in Riau Islands,” according to the chief of information division of the western fleet command, Lt Agus Cahyono, here on Monday.

Agus said the ships sailed from the Batam waters around 08.00 a.m. and will carry out activities in Anambas and Natuna on April 2 to 4.

In the waters of Anambas and Natuna, approximately 40 participating ships of the Multilateral Naval Exercise Komodo from 18 countries will conduct disaster simulations due to the explosion of offshore oil drilling rigs that pollute the ocean.

The exercise aims to develop a protocol of cooperation between countries in disaster management, especially those occurring in the territorial waters, Director of the Naval Exercise Vice Admiral Amarullah Oktavian said.
