Chinese bulkers detained at Indonesian ports

Dalian: More than 20 Chinese bulk carriers are currently being detained at Indonesian ports as the shipping companies couldn’t get approval for departure having loaded, and Indonesian authorities haven’t been able to provide any reasons yet for the delays.

An official from a China Shipping subsidiary told SinoShip News that the detention of vessels might be related to a recently released policy by Indonesian authorities that forbids the export of raw ore from January 12. However, he reckons the ports should not allow loading of the cargo in the first place should this be the reason for the lack of approval.

Indonesia is one of the main nickel ore exporters to China with more than half of China’s nickel ore imports coming from Indonesia. Chinese traders have been making large shipments since Indonesia announced the policy in December.
