Two Missing After Ship Sinks Off Indonesia

Two crewmen are missing and nine remain adrift on a lifeboat after their cargo ship, MV Emeline, sank off Selayar Islands.

The ship was carrying cement and departed from Soekarno-Hatta Seaport heading to Banyuwangi, East Java, on Tuesday. It is believed to have encountered inclement weather and rough seas.

The Makassar Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) was alerted about the ship’s situation on Wednesday morning.

Later that day, KM Mahakam River sailed through the area and rescued six men. Makassar Basarnas, in coordination with Makassar Naval Base, sent out a rescue boat to save the nine crewmen, after a search and rescue team using a helicopter failed to reach their location due to the strong wind.

The MV Emeline is an Indonesia-flagged cement carrier built in 1979.
