REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANDA ACEH – About 27 new islands emerge in the marine in Simeulue, Aceh, on the aftermath of earthquake and tsunami in December 2004. The new islands are showing the signs of life.

Before the tsunami, the number of small islands in Simeulue was only 41. “Now it is 68,” the Deputy Regent of Simeulue, Hasrul Edyar, said on Tuesday.

The new islands are the result of research conducted by National Coordinating Agency for Surveys and Mapping (Bakosurtanal), Indonesian Navy, Department of Fisheries, Department of Transportation and Medcoenergi on 2008. He said the some of the emerging islands were grown with bushes and wild plants. But some are barren desert.
