Storm threatens west coast of Sumatra

 

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MEDAN – The Agency of Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG) in Polonia, Medan, alerts people who live in coastline to the bad weather and high wave affected by tropical storm Bolaven in South China Sea. BMKG predicts the wave can reach 0.5-2.5 meters in Riau and Batam, Malaka Strait, Aceh, Nias, the western Indian Ocean, and Mentawai.

The wind in Indonesia blows from Southeast to Northwest on 3 to 25 knots. The condition can lead to the storm in western Indonesian, such as northern South China Sea, Malaka Strait, North Sumatra, and Aceh.

Local Disaster Management (BPBD) of North Sumatra warns the inhabitants to alert on tropical storm Bolaven. “The tropical cyclone affect the weather condition in Sumbagut. It can bring the rainfall with low to medium intensity,” the Head of North Sumatra’s BPBD, Ahmad Hidayat, said on Monday.

National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) predicts the tropical cyclone can increase on the next 24 hours. Several potential regions must be alerted due to the landfall. There are at least five regions in North Sumatra prone to typhoon.
