Moroccan EUROGATE Terminal Welcomes the World’s Largest Container Ship
The world’s largest container ship docked at the EUROGATE container terminal next to the Strait of Gibraltar yesterday evening.
The “CMA CGM Marco Polo” entered service in Ningbo (China) on 5 November and is charting its maiden voyage from there to Hamburg and Bremerhaven, where it is expected to arrive on 12 and 14 December respectively. Measuring 396 metres in length and with a load capacity of 16,020 standard containers (TEUs), the French shipping company’s newest vessel is the largest container ship in the world. The Moroccan deep-water terminal, EUROGATE Tanger, can easily accommodate large container ships with a draught of up to 16.20 m.
The arrival of the “CMA CGM Marco Polo” was celebrated in Tangier at a reception organised jointly by the Tanger Med Port Authority and EUROGATE Tanger.
“We are very proud to be able to send off the largest container ship in the world from our terminal,” says Marco Mignogna, Managing Director of EUROGATE Tanger S.A.
“Very few ports in the world have the required nautical conditions suitable for welcoming a container ship of this size. We are delighted that EUROGATE Tanger is one of these ports. We wish the ship all the very best and may it always have enough water beneath its keel.”
The “CMA CGM Marco Polo” left Tangier again at midnight to continue its journey to Northern Europe. The container ship was loaded and unloaded with 1,350 teus.
