Low Fish Catch Escalates Fish Price

BANDAR LAMPUNG, Kompas – Bad weather in Lampung waters for a month affects maritime commodity. The greatest impact is squid price hike up to 50 percent.

Contacted in Fish Auction Location, Payang Fisherman Village, Sukaraja District, Bandar Lampung, on Thursday (1/8), Ismiati, a fish vendor, said squid price hike has occurred since early December. “Since December, its price has increased. This week, kadut squid price is doubled,” she said.

Ismiati said if kadut squid is usually sold for IDR 30,000, currently, its price is IDR 70,000 per kilogram. Similar thing also occurs on candle squid whose previous price was IDR 35,000 and current price is IDR 75,000 per kilogram.

The condition occurs due to low fishermen’s catches. If usually in a day Ismiati can fish 10 kilograms squid from fishermen, currently, she can only gets 2 kilograms.

Low catches was confirmed by another fisherman named Fahrozi. He said Payang fishermen’s catches in Sukaraja has dropped since the early rainy season in mid-November 2014.

From Temanggung, Central Java, it was reported high waves at sea disrupt marine fish supply at the region. Bisri, a fish vendor in Kliwon Market, said marine fish supply has been disrupted since two weeks ago. “The captured fishery I still receive regularly is clams from coast,” he said.

In the condition, since two weeks ago, captured marine fish supply from outside Java is received by some vendors in Kliwon Market.

Bisri, for example, receives squids from Medan and Padang. Squid price is higher than those captured around Central Java from the previous IDR 46,000 to the current price of IDR 50,000 per kilogram.

In its neighboring region, Magelang Regency, bad weather and high wave also affect salted marine fish prices. According to Siti Rofiah, a vendor in Secang Market, Secang District, for the last ten days, salted fish price escalates for IDR 2,000 to IDR 5,000 per kilogram.

From East Nusa Tenggara, it was reported after having no college for almost a week, thousands of Flores students following education at some universities in Kupang have finally carried by PT Pelni’s vessel, KMP Unsini. The vessel departed from Makassar to Maumere, Larantuka, Lewoleba, Alor, and Kupang.

Meanwhile, after being calm for a day, bad weather strikes southeastern Maluku waters comprising Southeast Maluku Regency, Aru Islands, and Western Southeast Maluku again. Sea wave at the waters get more ferocious with 6-meter height. (Kompas)
