Indonesian business calls for special import, export ports to relieve congestion at Tanjung Priok – report
Indonesian Employers’ Association (Apindo) has urged the country’s government to determine separate ports for imports and exports, in a bid to resolve the congestion problem at Indonesia’s Tanjung Priok Port, The Jakarta Post reported yesterday quoting Apindo’s chairman Sofjan Wanandi.
The permanently increasing dwelling time at Tanjung Priok causes higher costs for the business and upsets international trade. The dwelling time grew to eight days in 2013 from six and a half days in 2012.
By comparison, the dwelling time in Singapore is 1.2 days and in Thailand five days.
Wanandi proposed development of a seaport for exports in the Kawasan Berikat Nusantara (KBN) special industrial economic zone in North Jakarta.
He also recommended establishment of a procedure for checking of import items at the traders’ warehouses instead at the port.
Tanjung Priok’s containers handling capability worsened in the past weeks. The port is not able reach its capacity of 600 boxes per day and processes only 170 containers, according to recent data of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin). That situation led to daily losses of IDR 4.8 billion (USD 468,000/EUR 354,000) for traders.
