Government Must Be Careful to Lower Fish Price

JAKARTA – Indonesian Traditional Fisherman Association (KNTI) reminded the government to carefully arrange permit and eradicate illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) Fishing aiming to lower fish price at domestic market this year. If we are not careful, the strategy will only hamper small fishermen’s welfare instead.

KNTI Chairman, Riza Damanik, said amid fuel price hike and drop along this month, sailing cost and fishermen’s daily needs keep increasing. “We have to know permit and IUU Fishing curbing processes are usually implemented for big vessels. Meanwhile, around 60-70% of Indonesian people’s domestic fish consumption needs comes from small fishermen,” he said in Jakarta on Tuesday (1/20).

According to the report of Permit and Non-Tax State Revenue Curbing and Illegal Fishing Settlement Team, one of the impacts of KP Minister Regulation No. 57/PermenKP/2014 about Second Revision of KP Minister Regulation Revision No. 30/Men/2012 about Captured Fishery Business in Indonesian Fishery Management Area is that fish price is affordable for low-class people. The other impact is the increasing captured fishes in fishery ports and the eradication of illegal fishing and transshipment to other countries. (Investor Daily)
