Cargo Ship on Fire in Red Sea Port

The Aqaba Civil Defense Directorate (Jordan) dealt with a Norwegian-flagged ship on fire Tuesday. The ship was loaded with 20,000 tons of wood, and was unloading its cargo at an Aqaba port gate when the blaze started up.

The Spokesman of the General Directorate of Civil Defense, Bri. Fareed Al- Sharae’a, stated that the civil defense teams cooperated with the Aqaba port civil defense station, Royal Navy Force vessels and Aqaba Port Marine Services Co. to extinguish the fire that broke out in one of the five cargo holds of the ship.

Al-Share’a added that the ship’s crew is using firefighting and preventive equipment on board.

Fortunately, there were no casualties. The cause of the fire is still under investigation; arson is doubtful.
