Chinese Fishing Ship Sinks Off Antarctica

A Chinese fishing vessel that made headlines last week after it caught fire and its crew had to be rescued from the blaze has sunk off the Antarctic Peninsula, The Australian reports, citing the Chilean navy.

The cause of the fire on the ship, the Kai Xin, is still being investigated by the ship’s parent company, which specializes in deep-sea fishing, according to The Australian. The fire appears to have burned up any fuel that could have caused a spill, said Captain Juan Villegas, maritime governor for Chile’s portion of Antarctica.

Chile’s navy was searching for the ship’s remains and still stood ready to contain any spilled fuel. The sinking was initially reported by another Chinese fishing vessel, which alerted Chilean authorities.
