Boat capsizes in southern Philippines, 10 dead
An official says 10 people have drowned and two are missing in the southern Philippines after their canoe capsized in a marsh during strong winds.
Mayor Allandatu Angas says the canoe overturned late Monday in the Liguasan Marsh, a remote swamp region in Maguindanao province, about 900 kilometers (560 miles) south of Manila.
Angas, the mayor of Sultan sa Barongis town, said 10 bodies were recovered Tuesday, including two children. All of the dead and missing were related.
He says there are six survivors. The accident happened during stormy weather.
The marsh is crisscrossed by rivers and covers a large area of about 220,000 hectares (543,620 acres) in the southern Mindanao region.
