South Korean Coast Guard Vessel Capsizes, 5 Dead

A South Korean coast guard vessel has capsized on Thursday, resulting in the death of five sailors – three Filipinos and two Chinese – who the coast guard crew had just rescued from a sinking cargo ship.

The vessel overturned while carrying 15 crewmembers rescued from the 5,436-tonne Malaysia-registered Shinline freighter near the southern island of Jeju, reports AFP. The surviving 10 freighter crewmen, as well as the all of the coast guard personnel onboard, were rescued by another coast guard ship involved in the rescue operation. There were no other injuries reported.

The Shinline began taking on water while on its way to Singapore and radioed for assistance. The freighter did eventually sink.

The coast guard ship reportedly capsized due to high waves. The rescued mariners and coast guard officers were taken to a local hospital following the incident.
