Pelni Passenger in 2014 Drops for 4.29%

JAKARTA – PT Pelayaran Nasional Indonesia (Pelni) recorded last year, it carried 4.56 million passengers or a 4.29-percent drop than in 2013 of 4.77 million passengers.

Akhmad Sujadi, PT Pelni Institutional Relations and Communication Manager, said passenger number drop is sparked by passenger number limitation of two-fold from vessel capacity during Christmas and New Year holiday seasons.

According to him, passenger limitation through ticket sale aims to maintain security and passenger safety due to high passenger volume during Christmas and New Year.

He asserted passenger limitation policy is implemented by the state-owned enterprise (BUMN) during Christmas and New Year from December 15th to January 15th 2015.

Akhmad added the limitation policy will be conducted in 2015 and so forth. “Peak season like Lebaran Day in last year, passengers can increase for 500%. 2,000-passenger capacity vessels can carry 8,000-10,000 pasengers,” he said on Thursday (1/8).

For commodity volume, Pelni also recorded hike compared to last year. Last year, commodity volume including container and four-wheel vehicle reached 498,458 cubic meters than 2013 of 494,643 cubic meters. The hike is caused by holiday season.

Akhmad also stated his office planned to renovate vessels as conducted to KM Kelud netering special-docking process.

According to him, budget need for special docking cost is around IDR 8 billion per unit for the vessels having 2,000-passenger capacity like KM Kelud.

Currently, Pelni has nine big vessels so the BUMN needs special docking cost of IDR 72 billion. (Bisnis Indonesia)
