HPI and IPC is Demanded to Optimize its Capacity

BUSINESS DEMAND for IPC and Hutchison Port Indonesia (HPI) to optimize and add more capacities in both container terminals through the addition of stevedoring facilities and instrument investment.

IPC and Hutchison are the managing bodies of Jakarta International Container Terminal (JICT) and TPK Koja in Tanjung Priok Port of Jakarta.

The General Chairman of Indonesian Sea Transportation Service User Board (Depalindo), Toto Dirgantoro, said although the government has been preparing Kalibaru and Cilamaya Karawang Terminal to anticipate the stagnation in Tanjung Priok port, the development of Priok until 2016 is still in consideration.

“For short term (until 2016), the capacity of JICT and TPK Koja still can be improved by the pile expansion area and also the quay extension (especially for TPK Koja),” he said, Thursday, 7 June 2012.

He said JICT and TPK Koja facilities optimization is to assure the export-import container load off service viability (ocean going) before the realization of Kalibaru and Cilamaya terminals).

“TPK Koja facilities are still can be improved by more than 1 million TEUs with various breakthroughs including quay expansion and pile area. The next reclamation, TPK Koja still can be used,” he said.

Toto said the obsolete stevedoring tools replacement investment in TPK Koja is necessarily to be conducted soon as had been conducted in JICT to drive terminal’s stevedoring acceleration.
Depalindo, he said, is also concerned with the debates and polemics on Kalibaru versus Cilamaya terminal projects.

“If being in extended debate, we’ll never start the development, while for the existing ones (TPK Koja and JICT), we have to pay continual attention on its development,” he explained.

Toto predicted in post 2016, the stevedoring flow (throughput) for export-import containers through Tanjung Priok port will in high increment by 30% from now on.

If in 2011, throughput in Priok container (including in JICT, TPK Koja and Multi-purpose Terminal) had reached 5.6 million TEUs (twenty foot equivalent units), he said, but in 2016, it predicted by almost 7 million TEUs.

“The indicators are due to in entering 2015, we will put in logistic integration in global level and on the beginning of 2013, we’ve started in Asean level,” said Toto.

Data from IPC II obtained by Bisnis on the export-import container load off flow through JICT on 2011 was of 2,265,202 TEU or equal with 1,531,069 boxes while through TPK Koja reached of 839,245 TEUs (550,461 boxes).

For January to May 2012, container flow through JICT had reached 892,080 TEUs (596 boxes), while in TPK Koja, it was of 323,288 TEUs (213,917 boxes).
