Double pirate attacks off Yemen

Dubai: Pirates attacked two ships off the coast of Yemen yesterday, just 18 minutes apart from each other.

A bulker was intercepted by a skiff with armed men aboard. A heavy response from the private security firm onboard the bulker eventually deterred this attack. A tanker was then hit 18 minutes later, possibly by the same skiff. The tanker evaded the pirates.

The NATO Shipping Center warned recently that: “Current conditions are favourable to piracy activity, and the presence of pirate attack groups at sea in the High Risk Area (HRA) cannot be ruled out. The threat of piracy against merchant shipping continues throughout the HRA.”
