Indonesia touted as transhipment base
Jakarta: As Singapore’s port capacity gets squeezed Indonesia has an opportunity to take on a transhipment role, especially for the transpacific trades, a researcher at Delft University has claimed. Ronald Apriliyanto Halim told local media yesterday: “Based on the current international trade development, Indonesia has the potential to be active in global maritime network as a transhipment port, which would enhance its national income.”
Halim predicted that Singapore will suffer overcapacity in the coming years which present Indonesia with an opportunity.
“In this case, looking at the distance between Singapore and Indonesia, Indonesia has a huge potential to develop and massively activate its ports in Sumatra and Batam islands by absorbing the excess capacity demand at Singapore’s port,” he explained.
