India: Merchant Navy ship sinks off Lakshadweep, all 22 crew rescued
Kochi: A Maldivian container vessel started sinking near off Minicoy islands in Lakshadweep after a engine snag but all 22 crew members, including four Indians, on board were rescued by a Coast Guard ship on Wednesday night.
The crew members which also had 18 Maldivians are now on board Coast Guard ship ‘Varuna’ and are fine, top Coast Guard sources said.
Varuna is near the sinking ship which is still flooding, the sources said. It has not yet been decided if the rescued crew would be brought to Kochi.
The vessel had developed engine failure last night and was drifting. Some vessels had reported the matter to the Coast Guard which immediately rushed ‘Varuna’ by 3 pm.
